It’s no longer a secret to anyone that Ford isn’t manufacturing a lot of cars these days, but they are manufacturing a lot of pickups. And the automaker manufactures them well, as evidenced by the enormous numbers they sell. The 2021 Ford F-150 will be no exception to the rule.
There! Now you know everything. Well, not quite… Ford didn’t start from scratch when building the all-new model of the best-selling pickup in its class. They used the same chassis, but they’ve refined the existing engines. They’ve partially restyled the exterior, redesigned the cab and added a number of new features, but most importantly, they’re offering the first fully hybrid pickup.
The new PowerBoost hybrid will combine the 3.5 L EcoBoost V6 engine with a 10-speed automatic transmission, as well as a 35 kW electric motor and a 1.5 kWh lithium-ion battery. It toggles automatically between gasoline mode, electric mode and hybrid mode depending on driving conditions. It also uses regenerative braking to recharge the battery, so there’s no need to plug it in.
As for the specifications, Ford has stated that they expect to see best-in-class power and torque with a minimum towing capacity of 12,000 pounds. The Ford F-150’s PowerBoost hybrid engine should be able to go around 1,100 kilometers on a single tank of gas.
On the exterior, you’ll still recognize the basic classic design, but each panel has been reworked. The front fenders are higher, the headlights have been refined and the bumpers are more elegant.
There should be a number of refinements to rival the luxurious cab of the F-150’s most serious competitor, the Dodge Ram 1500. They say we can expect to see higher-quality materials and more storage compartments.
Other practical features are intended to make things easier for those planning to use the F-150 as a mobile workspace. For example, the 10-speed automatic gear shift lever can be folded flat against the center console to provide a large, practical work surface. The F-150 can also be ordered with front seats that fold down to provide a sleeping area.
Passenger space in this pickup, which is among the best-selling in the country, should be similar to that of the outgoing model, whose four-door crew cab is the roomiest and most family-friendly of the lot. We should also see several improvements in the bed, starting with the available power running boards, which will now extend down the side of the pickup, providing a convenient step for accessing the cargo area. An available power generator will provide up to 7.2 kW of electricity to meet the needs on the worksite or during tailgate parties when your favorite team is playing.
Admit it! Now that you can claim to know a little more about the 2021 Ford F-150, you probably can’t wait to come discover it at Solution Ford.
